Separate School conference in Toronto
By Zak
Gearing up for the Ontario provincial election this fall, a day-long conference on eliminating separate schools will be held in Toronto May 28, 2011.
The speaker line up is ok, mostly a variety of activists from different organizations who have been fighting separate schools over the last several years. Those of us familiar with the issue probably won’t learn anything new but it will be a good introduction for anyone who wants to get involved and meet the various players in the movement.
The conference is organized by the One School System Network, a loose coalition of organizations dedicated to eliminating the separate school system in Ontario. CFI:Canada is one of the founding and sustaining members.
They haven’t quite figured out online registration (you want me to mail a cheque? wtf?) so I plan on just showing up at the door.

I feel like we’re stuck between a rock and a hard spot. McGuinty, who is Roman Catholic to begin with (albeit quite liberal), doesn’t seem to have any interest in eliminating the separate school boards in Ontario. Tim Hudak, who is an evangelical, would probably support the creation of MORE school boards (one for each religion?) Hmm, wonder what the NDPs position is on this topic?

The NDP has been reluctant to acknowledge the problem because they have a strong base within Catholic school unions. However, activists within the party have, in the past, introduced motions for the party to change its position so the party might change it’s mind someday.
The Green party supports the elimination of separate schools and made it one of their central positions last election.
