I actually go to a catholic school in Ontario, one of the highest ranking schools in Canada actually, and am also an adamant atheist as are my parents. I go to this school because being in a relatively secluded community (45 minutes out from Ottawa) there are not many options for schools. It was either this one (high ranking) or another public school that is ranked as in the lowest 10%. As long as the student is able to understand that the community is going to have a bias, they will do just fine. My school has prayer every day with the anthem, and I stand quietly, I never do the sign of the cross, and the teachers know that, and don't care. MANY times I have argued about religion with teachers and staff, and not once have I ever been punished for not believing in their God.

What I'm trying to get at here, is that the morals and values are not that inflexible. Most of my friends don't believe in God, and nor do I. We still go to the school masses, and we go through the motions. We do this because we choose to be here, because we want the good education and time with friends that comes with it. As long as we think that is worth going through motions, then so be it.

"And everyone, please. Simmer down and do us all a favour. It you don’t subscribe to Catholic beliefs, don’t put your kids in Catholic schools and don’t have family members teach in them."

Is she intentionally missing the point?
