I just realized I spelled antiquated incorrectly in my post. Ouch.

I should clear up that my attack on the terms 'traditional' and 'old-fashioned' were only meant in the context I would imagine they would come from someone who would answer 'Yes' to each of the questions in this poll.

Many 'traditional' things are fine and I didn't mean to blanket all of them together. But when we're discussing a Mitt Romney return to tradition where women are in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant while everyone obeys their bible and rich white men make all decisions then yes I think the term 'traditional' means as I defined it before.

Those survey questions are quite badly worded. Number 4 probably needs a "should" (unless the question was intended to find out whether people think school boards do, in fact, have the right to fire homosexual teachers under American law) and Number 7 isn't even a statement with which one could agree or disagree. Seems very sloppy and unprofessional.

That said, my answers would be similar to yours, with a few annotations...

(5) If "dangerous books" means Mein Kampf or a lavishly illustrated copy of the 120 Days of Sodom, then I would be in favour of keeping them out of public school libraries below the high school level. If it means Harry Potter or that horrible racist screed (yeah, right) Huckleberry Finn, then I think the idea of "banning" them is ridiculous.

(6) My views on family and marriage, like my views on most things, are probably old-fashioned in some ways and quite radical in others.

(8) Whatever "traditional roles" this question is referring to, I doubt that I would want women to return to them.

(9) I think it's unfortunately true that women get fewer opportunities than men for good jobs, by and large. This question was probably included to gauge the respondent's level of sympathy with feminism, perhaps as a proxy for "progressive" politics in general.

I don't agree with Jason that "old-fashioned" and "traditional" mean "antiquated and defined by white men". I guess it would be fair to say that almost everything considered traditional in Canadian society was defined at some point by white people, because we are after all a Western nation. (Stop the presses!) But women were undoubtedly involved in the process, and old-fashioned traditions are "antiquated" (as opposed to just old) only to the extent that they are harmful or counter-productive in the modern world. That's the case for some of them, but not for others.

I found this article on CNN.com. It is a reply to the poll and gives a positive spin from the religious side saying that faith isn't disappearing but instead it is changing and growing up. It is now allowing doubt to be a part of it. It's not a bad read and something to consider.

Why can't I get a call for a survey like that instead of the constant calls for surveys on travel I seem to get.

I too would want the terms 'dangerous books', 'old-fashioned', and 'traditional' defined because to me the Bible is a dangerous book and the terms 'old-fashioned' and 'traditional' mean 'antequated and defined by white men'.

But beyond that this survery seems pretty poorly done overall. As Veronica said, the last question seems completely out of place and the others beg for even people of faith to answer no to because they're so black or white.

I liked the results overall though.

I'd answer the questions and I can't wait to see what the results are here in Canada.

I took a look at Coyne's results and it seems to me there should be more questions than just those.

I'm happy to see a general increase of religious doubt among black respondents.
