Not that I want to get on this merry go round with Joe again but I think there are good counter arguments to a few of Nussbaums arguments. Balaclavas and doctors are generally only worn for a determinate period of time in very specific circumstances and arent standard day to day wear. Furthermore if covering the ears and brow are not the same as covering the mouth and nose in terms of facial recognition. Laws against wearing a mask in public existed in some jurisdiction before this issue even came about.

And while I dont think the 'degrading' argument is a good argument in favour of banning the burqa (If people wanted to live under the thumb of various social influences), I think that the influences that go into wearing a mini skirt or tight jeans are far less coercive than the influence that compels some/most women who wear burqas to wear them.

Pamela Geller spoke at the anti-Islam event and seems to think it went pretty well, so I guess Swedish accommodationists (apologists?) need more practice at militancy. Geller's persecution complex and over-the-top absolutism are on full display, of course.

As for Nussbaum, I largely agree with her arguments about the burqa, but I think she's wrong to draw such a close equivalence between hatred of Jews and hatred of Muslims. Pam Geller and her fellow "counter-jihadists" don't regard Muslims as biologically tainted, and don't hold them collectively responsible for a specific "crime" such as the execution of Jesus, but hatred of Jews has often included both those elements.

Accommodationism is an accusation. I find the word... and the act of trying to spell it, amusing.

But yes, I was making a sarcastic comment on the nature of 'accommodation' and 'militancy'. Since those two words are often used to describe atheists..

I tend to agree with those who criticize references to 'militant atheism' as being unfair in the literal sense.

I'm glad you found it funny, and yes, the intent was humorous. Even though, we might disagree on why it is funny, I'm glad you got the joke.

You said, you wanted to kill islam, yesterday.
I can't see any mechanism for that, based on our current level of technology, that doesn't involve destroying those who believe. So, either we should not interpret you literally, or you are advocating genocide.

Maybe you have a... more sophisticated interpretation.

Oh, and of course, anyone who reads this blog on a regular basis knows how much I love hatred. And fascism and Hitler.

Why you're unable to separate the person from the belief is beyond me.

You do not need to be a ''scholar'' to understand that all of the 'holy' books are rife with hatred towards women. But that's okay according to you and other 'moderates' because ....sorry, this is where your thinking fails me.

Larry

I think you may understand this post better than I do.
What is the point of the title?

How is the aggressive activity of the Swedish leftists the opposite of accomadationism and why use scare quotes around accomadationism?

LOL. Very funny.

Just a word of warning. Some people might not understand your sarcasm. They might think you are actually equating the aggressive activity of the Swedish leftists with "accommodationism" instead of showing exactly the opposite.

Cherry picking... not sure, I'm not an Islamic scholar...
You've definitely got the hyperbolic rhetoric nailed down though.

Maybe you should write your own surahs. Then we can all sit down and interpret it, and then argue over whether you were advocating muslim genocide.
