To go boldly…

…without splitting any gosh darn infinitives.

Just kidding, I mostly like Star Trek, although I always found it a bit saccharin for my taste. My brand of humanism includes a healthy cynicism.

Speaking of cynicism, I was up to watch the Mars landing thing and was thoroughly disappointed. Not that I don’t think it is as an awesome success, and I’m sure it will lead to lots of cool photos and such. But the actual news coverage of the event was a bit of an anti-climax. Not much to see here, please move along.

Ok, so enough of the cynic. I actually got invited to a different kind of space party last week, a celebration for a podcast that had reached it’s tenth episode. Amusingly, I hadn’t actually listened to the podcast, but I often hang out with sciency types, so this sort of thing happens to me.

To make up for my ignorance, the party was actually fun, entertaining and even educational, I started plowing through the podcasts this weekend on my ipod. And it turns out The Star Spot, the most recent brainchild of CFI’s Justin Trottier, is quite well done in my opinion.

The focus of the podcast is space and astronomy, and includes space news as well as interviews with scientists and other space related personalities.

So far, I’ve listened to
Ep 2: Dan Falk – Science Writer and Author
Ep 3: Dr. Carolyn Porco – Planetary Scientist who was part of the Cassini mission
Ep 4: Dr. Victoria Kaspi – Astrophysicist
Ep 10: Dr. Julian Barbour – Theoretical Physicist

Now, I’m not a big astronomy guy, and I think robots make better astronauts than humans, but if you like this sort of thing, and/or the recent mars mission has whet your appetite for spacey stuff. Check out The Star Spot, I give it a thumbs up.
