It always amuses me when people use the phrase ‘fighting fire with fire’ as if it’s a good strategy. When you think about for a second or two, the very idea is… well… ridiculous. Taking reasonable precautions is one thing, but giving into fear helps no one. Atheists face discrimination, but we are not the only ones.
East Toronto filmmaker Faud Chowdhury will be screening his latest documentary Change Your Name Ousama – How Canadian Muslims Were Marginalized by 9/11, at The Fox, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. This 48-minute documentary reflects on the experiences of Muslim-Canadians after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack in the United States.
We should definitely be asking Muslims to stand up against the extremists in their midst, but I think we should also be prepared to support them as well, when they need our help.
