First, some of the information in the July 6 post “Blindsided” is incorrect. Ontario Bill 72: An Act to proclaim Pope John Paul II Day has not been passed. It has completed its second reading and has been “Ordered referred to Standing Committee.” The Canadian Secular Alliance and Canadian Atheist are watching developments, writing letters and getting the word out, so as many people as possible can express their feelings of outrage.
Speaking of outrage, Jason Thibeault from Lousy Canuck posted is asking his readers to “Tell Canadian Senators Not to Pass ‘Pope Day’ Bill!” Thebeault’s readers’ comments are worth reading:
Hopefully, it’ll get a court challenge on the “government promoting religion” line, after it’s inevitably passed. And thank fuck for the integrity of the Canadian Supreme Court.
Maybe make it so they can have pope day but it has to be accompanied by heaps of material to show what kind of vile pieces of shit the various popes have been. Hell, make a gameshow, the “evil, greedy, misogynistic, hypocritical, theocratic fucker” edition of mastermind!
