It sounds mostly amicable, with a difference in emphasis being the primary difference. The Sunday Assembly is moving slightly away from the atheist brand, while the New York contingent is hoping to play up atheism and mock religion a bit more.
The word schism comes from “late Middle English: from Old French scisme, via ecclesiastical Latin from Greek skhisma ‘cleft’, from skhizein ‘to split,’” and the definition reads
the formal separation of a Church into two Churches or the secession of a group owing to doctrinal and other differences.
So now unbelievers have a choice: attend a Sunday Assembly:
or the Godless Revival:
According to its Facebook page, the purpose of the Godless Revival is “A celebration of life and godlessness.” Sunday Assembly has better advice, “Wonder more,” which prompts us to wonder, “What is the Godless Revival reviving: atheism?” Is atheism dormant, or is the creation of yet another atheist church necessary due to
religious doctrinal differences?
With the NYC Sunday Assembly going all religious we are here to offer you a show that celebrates our Atheism instead of hiding it. Our first event is this coming October the 27th, stay tuned for details.
Schisms are for churches, and it doesn’t matter whether they are called Sunday assemblies or godless revivals, they are churches. Most unbelievers have better things to do on Sunday than attend church.
