A Moral Obligation
Nov 30th
Should medical professionals be able to pick and choose which procedures they perform? I’m not talking about specialization. Cardiologists don’t perform brain surgery because it is not their area of expertise. What about medical procedures that are part of the expertise? Should the specialist have the right to refuse them on moral or ethical grounds? More >

Among the more recent of the US Congress’ irrational decisions comes the gem about preserving the sanctity of an unhealthy cafeteria lunch. More >
A Shorter Education…
Nov 2nd
It still bothers me that modern areas of the world can be so culturally behind the times. Shorter University in Georgia is forcing over 200 employees to sign a “Personal Lifestyle Statement” that rejects drug use, premarital sex, and homosexuality. This is apparently within the confines of the legal system (for now) because the university is not publicly funded. Employees who chose not to sign the statement could risk losing their job. More >
Four Outta Five Ain’t Bad, Russ
Oct 20th
In his article Five Candidates for the Corporate Death Penalty, Russell Mokhiber makes many valid points. Perhaps I should say that there are many points for which I will take his word on, but lack the means, energy, and patience to validate them myself. These points include statements such as most industrialized western countries have socialized medicine. The USA seems to be the only one where corporations may sell private health insurance. He mentions the fact that the “Big Banks” in the USA hold too much of the nation’s GDP; that they should be broken up so they can relinquish some of their political and governmental control.
These are both assertions I’ve heard before and agree with. There are others in the article, too, that are just as convincing for someone with my beliefs. Where he lost me, however, was his paragraph on nuclear power. More >

Chris Hedges Shuts Down Kevin O’Leary of CBC
Totally worth the watch.
Thank You Jesus

Here’s a photo that showed up on my Facebook yesterday. It drew quite a few comments; though the controversy drifted into a debate about whether this was “bashing” someone else’s beliefs.
The original poster, who is not one of my Facebook friends, tagged a friend of mine in the photo. My friend is actually starting his own ministry near the University of Calgary. He’s definitely one of the nicest and most patient people I’ve ever met. And while I don’t agree with his underlying reason for spreading peace and forgiveness, his mission is truly about love. National Post Intolerance Ad
Sep 30th
Thank You, National Post, for letting Charles McVety, president of the Canada Christian College, display his full page ad of intolerance in your newspaper; especially after other, less prominent news sources were simply too liberal and open-minded to say “yes”. What vision you must have for the future of this country. What dedication and integrity you must yield to allow such news real-estate to be utilized in such a way. Thank you for leading the effort in removing all confusion from our classroom. I would hate for my child to be exposed to reality; or to question the world around them.
Well, I think five words in the add pretty much sum up the mentality of the people who created and/or support it: “Don’t teach me to question…“. When faith is enough, you don’t need anything else; no need to question history, science, or morality. And therein lies the foundation of my unbelief.
How is this still an issue in 2011 in a Country as developed as ours. How does an editor not laugh this guy out of his sales advertising office? Maybe it’s naive, but I’m actually surprised by this.
Faster than Light
Sep 30th
Recently, a scientific anomaly made international headlines. You may or may not have heard about it, or understood the extent of the implications. If all of this is entirely news to you, an experiment was performed to send a beam of neutrinos from Geneva to Gran Sasso (733km away). The scientific article, posted publicly here, suggests the neutrinos were detected moving faster than the speed of light.
The Illusion of Truth

The mind is a wonderfully complex tool. We truly do not understand it very well, but that is changing. As it turns out, our conscious mind is the tip of the ice burg into our perceptions, recognitions, thoughts, ideas, likes, dislikes, and many other things. Long before we know why we’ve thought of something, our subconscious has been piecing it together for us; without consent.
Interestingly, there is a phenomenon of our conscious-subconscious relationship called implicit memory. This is basically a fancy (and evidently more simplistic) way of grouping the things that you remember, but don’t remember that you actually remember them (yeah… I rofl’d too). More >
